01.05.2011

Over two million pilgrims are expected to attend the beatification ceremony of the late Polish pope, John Paul II, in Rome on May 1. But many of pilgrims will be celebrating this special day in Krakow’s Sanctuary of Divine Mercy. The Cardinal Archbishop of Krakow Stanisław Dziwisz said: “John Paul II was strongly associated with this church holiday. I am delighted that the special message that this holiday brings will be heeded once more throughout the world”.

The Divine Mercy ceremony at the Sanctuary in Lagiewniki begins on 30 April at 8pm with a nocturnal vigil which will last until 5 in the morning. Lagiewniki will be one of the five places in the world linked by satellite to Rome and the faithful gathered at the vigil there (In the Sanctuary of Lagniewniki the prayer intention will take the theme of youth; in the Sanctuary of Kawekamo, Bugando, Tanzania, the family; in the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lebanon, Harissa, evangelization; in the Basilica of Sancta Maria de Guadalupe, Mexico City, hope and peace among peoples; and in the Sanctuary of Fatima, the Church).

On the day of the beatification, 1 May, at 10am a live transmission from St Peter’s Cathedral in Rome begins of the Holy Mass. Big screens will also be set up in the grounds of the recently built “Have No Fear!” Centre and on the Main Market Square. At 3p.m. an Hour of Mercy will be celebrated.
There will be many spiritual and cultural events in Krakow connected with John Paul II beatification, so everyone can find a lot of suggestions for this unusual time.
